Matty Rubenstein
For over 15 years I've led boards, staff & volunteer teams, in cross-functional, transformational initiatives for leading global associations like IEEE. Before entering the association world, I spent over 15 years in customer-facing advisory roles in industry blue-chips like HP and EMC, serving technology, finance and insurance clients. I have a portfolio of over 60 projects, spanning every association silo including strategy, product, process, programs, operations, IT, education, membership, finance, conferencing, and standards. I've partnered with C-Suite and senior executives in departments with budgets of $10Ms to $100Ms, as well as interassociation & intercompany engagements.
I thrive in ambiguous and developing environments, a fast learn, and independent thinker.
I've built my career around developing solutions while the problem is still being understood,
delighting clients with unexpected results and opportunities.
I've run teams comprising staff and volunteers, as well as inter-association and corporate stakeholders. Competent leading all phases of projects, from discovery and research, thru planning to implementation. From early in my career, I have focused on adoption and change - so if you build it they will come never features in my work. I'm financially fluent in $MM contexts, from framing stakeholder conversations in a $10M backend system transformation, to building risk models to recognize $10Ms of stuck revenue, as well as creating business cases and running budgets. With a background in sales and marketing, I have a strong eye for supply-chain, along with the viability of new products and services. Finally, my diverse domain and skills background empowers me to ask those difficult questions, borrow ideas and challenge the status quo.
During my career, I have grown from a team tactician into a strategic leader in functional, corporate, and industry contexts. My insights and leadership have been published in various periodicals, websites and soon in my book exploring the future of associations. I possess a comprehensive understanding of financial, risk, change, and project management, honed through managing multimillion-dollar projects where I developed business cases, budgets, and project plans. This experience has sharpened my leadership skills, enhanced my management of direct and indirect reports, and strengthened my relationships internally & externally. I am adept at conducting best-in-class discovery and I'm the consummate quick read, which supports my data-driven decision-making process. By deriving actionable intelligence from primary and personal sources, I ensure informed and strategic outcomes.
With all this in hand, I am seeking to move into an executive role in a leading association where I can drive evolution, and dare I say revolution, from within the association space. Whether in a leadership role such as Executive Director, Chief Operations Officer, Chief Strategy Officer or Chief International Officer, I bring years of knowledge from across all organization verticals, experience from $100Ks to $100Ms operations, and a portfolio of projects touching almost every controversy. Alternatively, as an Interim or Transitional Executive Director, my years of consulting will enable a smooth capture of current state, development of future state, and a pathway between the two.
